Moldova Cities with Hotels

Moldovia mini map    Moldova, independent republic in southeastern Europe, bordered on the north, east, and south by Ukraine and on the west by Romania. It is also known as Moldavia, and was formerly the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The Prut River forms Moldova's western boundary, and the Dnestr River forms part of the country's northeastern and southeastern boundaries. Between 1990 and 1994 Moldova contained two separatist regions: the Trans-Dnestr region, located east of the Dnestr River and populated predominantly by Russians and Ukrainians, and the Gagauz region in southeastern Moldova, populated by the Gagauz minority, a people of Turkic origin. The constitution adopted in 1994 granted significant autonomy to both regions; however, leaders in the Trans-Dnestr region have continued to press for independent statehood. Chisinàu, is Moldova's capital and largest city.

Land and Resources
Moldova's total area is about 33,700 sq km (about 13,000 sq mi). The country is largely a hilly plain. Its average elevation is 147 m (about 482 ft) above sea level, with a maximum height of about 430 m (about 1410 ft). Despite Moldova's low elevation, the country's topography is very steep in some places.
Climate
The climate is continental, with some modification of conditions by the Black Sea. Winters are fairly mild, with average daily temperatures in January between -3° to -5° C (about 23° to 27° F). Summers are quite warm, with average daily temperatures in July generally exceeding 20° C (68° F) and daily highs reaching 40° C (104° F) on occasion. Precipitation is fairly light and irregular, and is least in the south, where it averages 350 mm (about 14 in) per year. Precipitation is greatest in the higher elevations, where it can exceed 600 mm (about 23 in) per year. Irrigation is practiced in the south and southeast. All rivers and streams drain into the Black Sea. The Dnestr and the Prut are the two largest rivers. Steppe and forest-steppe are the predominant vegetation types. Forests of beech, oak, and hornbeam used to occupy roughly one-third of Moldova, but are now limited to the central portion of the country. A wide variety of wildlife resides in the republic, although the population of certain animals, such as wolves, has declined dramatically over the last century. Roe deer are abundant, but due to the depletion of other deer species, the spotted deer was introduced to Moldova from far eastern Russia. Members of the weasel family are common, including badgers and martens.
